Local Doctor Donates His Weekends for Teen Athletes

Free sports physicals for local teen athletes at South Brevard high schools

By Michelle Mulak, FLORIDA TODAY

For families with middle or high-school athletes, the to-do list to get your child ready to play a sport can be lengthy. Between consent forms and questionnaires, parent meetings, purchasing equipment, getting sports physicals and planning for practice schedules, it can feel overwhelming. In recent years this has driven many parents to low-cost clinics for sports physicals performed by a non-MD. These discount physicals are often convenient, easy to arrange, and cost significantly less than heading over to the pediatrician's office. But at what cost?

Quick and cheap sports physicals can leave out some really important health screenings such as a heart health screening or comprehensive orthopedic assessment. Getting this right is important, and doctors know this.

This understanding is behind Dr. David Dominguez's decision to create a program that provides more comprehensive sports physicals for young athletes.Every Saturday for the next five weekends, Dominguez, who is an orthopedic surgeon with 3D Sports Medicine in Indian Harbour Beach, and a team of physicians, nurses, and physicians' assistants will visit high schools in south Brevard to perform sports physicals for area teens.

These sports physicals are free for local families. A $10 donation is suggested. All donations will be used to purchase imPACT concussion testing kits for the athletics programs at the school where the physicals are being performed. These testing kits are used to form base-level and post-injury assessments on high school athletes who are suspected to have concussions. This helps to pre-diagnose dangerous concussion injuries and advise parents and coaches when medical attention is necessary.

Dominguez will be at Palm Bay High School from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday in the gymnasium. Physician, RN, ARNP, and certified athletic trainer volunteers are needed for all of the remaining events.
